There’s an increasing focus on leadership development for the Rising Gen. For good reason. Many Rising Gen struggle to know how to engage and lead in their family enterprises effectively when there isn’t a plan—and it isn’t agreed upon by all members of the family.
Leadership planning is best developed at three key career stages. The first stage occurs when the Rising Gen is in their early career years. During this stage, Rising Gen should aim to gain professional work experience, build functional skills, and most importantly determine what they are passionate about in their career.
This stage is all about self-exploration. Family businesses should encourage the Rising Gen (if they don’t do it themselves) to take the initiative to participate in training programs with coaches or mentors who can help the Rising Gen develop individually. A part of this training is identifying a family’s core values.
There are three questions every Rising Gen member should ask themselves during this stage of leadership development. You can find the three questions in this article. Be sure to read to the end, because the article further explains the last two career stages that are necessary for leadership planning.
