Communication is key to building trust among the family and strengthening relationships in a family business, and yet it’s a skill many struggle to develop.
To develop communication skills, the best place to start is with yourself. This may be surprising. We tend to voice our communication frustrations by criticizing how others behave. However, by understanding our unique communication styles, we can better hone our active listening and feedback skills. We become more mindful of how we interact with others. And we can better appreciate the perspective and communication styles of others.
For families who want to improve their communication dynamics, group skill-building can be useful. Barabara and Stephanie recommend using an assessment tool.
