It’s not easy setting boundaries when you work in a family business. In a non-family business setting, personal life is separate from work life. And family members are just that: family. Not fellow employees. 

The same can’t be said for a family business.

Lines blur when a family dinner turns into an impromptu business meeting, or when a weekend phone call to your sibling shifts from casual catch-up to discussing inventory shortages or employee issues. These moments can take a toll. 

You may find yourself dreading your return home from work. You may also feel on edge, unable to relax at home. These are indicative of burnout. Without clear boundaries between work and your personal life, burnout can be a serious problem. It can strain relationships, diminish productivity, and even leave you feeling disconnected from life.
